Cornerstone

Cornerstone offers an opportunity for women (18 and older) who share a mutual desire to grow closer to the Lord to do so beginning with a 26-hour parish retreat followed by the development of community through prayer groups.

The retreat takes place every other spring, on site at Our Lady Queen of Peace.

A reunion of past and present members occurs about one month after the retreat. Prayer meetings are once a month thereafter in the cafeteria and twice a month from January until the annual retreat.

Cursillo

What is the Cursillo? - Translated from the Spanish it is “A short course in Christianity.” The Cursillo has one purpose—to give those who make it a deeper understanding of basic Christian truths so they can take their place in the church’s mission of making Christ present to the world in all their environments. Also, as an individual, the Cursillo experience will foster a closer relationship with your God.

People from all walks of life spend 3 full days together beginning Thursday night and ending Sunday afternoon. They pray, study, eat and sleep in the same building for the entire Cursillo.

Who conducts the Cursillo? - A team of priests and laypeople from the diocese of Newark.

Who may attend a Cursillo? - ANYONE. The Cursillo is given seperately to men and women. Any person between the ages of 23 and 75 (including priests and religious) of the diocese may make a Cursillo. Cursillo weekends are held about 4 times during the year.

How does the Cursillo fulfill its purpose? - Through the 3 day course in the fundamentals of the spiritual life and a follow-up program called “Group Reunions”. Group Reunions can consist of as few as 2 people and usually meet in the attendee’s homes at their discretion. The group reunion helps sustain and foster the person’s desire to live more fully as a Christian.

The Our Lady Queen of Peace parish co-sponsors the St. Peter’s Academy, with St. Peter’s Parish in River Edge.

St Peter Academy is staffed by the Religious Sisters Filippini and 17 dedicated and certified teachers, who are committed to bringing out the best in each student, as we grow in knowledge, skills and values.

Our academy consists of a full day kindergarten thru grade 8 with an after care program. The Academy also has an early childhood program. Three and four year old tiny tots are accepted in this program.

Our academy provides us with a strong religious education curriculum. We explore our faith through daily classes, daily prayer, participation in monthly first Friday masses, paraliturgies, Lenten stations of the cross and our annual may crowning.

Our academic education is challenging! High standards, strong motivation, effective discipline and an atmosphere of caring combine to foster excellence! We score well above the national averages in standardized testing and due to the strong foundation which we receive at the academy, all our alumni are successful and many achieve honor status in their high schools.

Our state of the art computer and science lab programs are two of the highlights of our school. Our new science lab is air conditioned and provides our students with ample space to perform hands-on experiments.

The expanded programs at the academy include gym, art, music, library and spanish. After school programs include basketball, track, cheerleaders, bowling club, computer photo shop club, photography club, student council, newspaper and yearbook.

You'll be impressed with the quality and level of student participation. We would like more children from our parish to experience a great catholic education. I am proud of my school and hope to see you there to share the good news - excellence in catholic education - making a world of difference!
